Following the expansion of Christianity in to the Lake Ţana region of Ethiopia in the fourteenth century, a large number of monasteries and churches were built in Lake Tana region. The monastery of Zegé, whose foundation is attributed to Saint Betre Maryam, was one of these monasteries. The monastery has served as the basis of administration, taxation and court arbitration in the socio-economic life of the people of Zege ,a peninsula located in Lake Tana to south west of Bahir dar town which is 565kms far from Addis Ababa,capital of Ethiopia.
