Biotechnology is gaining ground rapidly. Scientific community is on their toes to isolate the specific microbes and study. In this context, a bacterial isolate with protease production potential was evaluated. 1st chapter deals with introduction on proteases and sources, production strategies, classification and mechanism and current problems. 2nd chapter deals with review of literature on protease isolation procedures, assays, importance of scale up, purification and zymography, etc. 3rd chapter emphasizes on purification, characterization, optimization of bacterial growth and protease production. 4th chapter deals on experimental data with six sub units - A) on isolation of microbes and ribotyping identification. B) Optimization of enzyme production. C) Scale up studies. D and E) On protease production by immobilized cells and solid state fermentation. F) On purification, characterization at karytyping and molecular aspects, and industrial application potential with special reference to detergent and leather sectors. In chapter V, the total research activity was summarized and concluded. An exhaustive bibliography was given at the end.
