CSR is basically a business imperative. Corporate social responsibility is the commitment of business to contribute to sustainable economic development—working with employees, their families, the local community and society at large to improve the quality of life. CSR also tends to reinforce the importance of addressing fundamental issues of the investment climate through public sector action. The term Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) includes environmental, social, and human rights-based impacts and initiatives of companies and many countries in both industrialized and the third world takes the concept and practices seriously. The majority of the large international mining companies have signed on to the sustainable development charter (ICMM), which compromises them to following good environmental and social practices, as well as supporting local community development. The Book on ‘Corporate Social Responsibility in Mining Industry: Global Vision and Indian Perspective’ authored by Dr. A. N. Sarkar, is a modest attempt to address these emerging issues linking Mining industry with sustainable development through environment and human value- chains.
