Since the first cardiac surgeries in a small series of patients in the year 1967, nowadays heart operations are the most frequently performed surgeries in Europe and North America. Because many areas of cardiovascular medicine remain nondeterministic and incompletely understood, patient-oriented research activities are intended to discover general patterns of heart disease and treatment. In this book, a data mart architecture is proposed that advances the research in daily clinical practice. The applicability is demonstrated in several fields, including (i) generating new knowledge from observational studies, (ii) assessing preoperative risks of adverse surgical outcomes, (iii) getting insights into historical performance changes, (iv) monitoring surgical results, and (v) improving risk estimation.
