Aptamil Preterm is a specialized infant formula designed for premature and low birth weight babies. It provides nutrient-dense nutrition tailored to support the unique developmental needs of babies born before 37 weeks of gestation or with birth weights below 2.5 kg.
What is Aptamil Preterm?
Aptamil Preterm is a clinically formulated milk powder that bridges the gap between breast milk and standard infant formulas. It contains higher calorie density and specific nutrient ratios to support catch-up growth and developmental milestones in premature infants during their critical early months.
Key Ingredients & Nutritional Composition
- Whey protein dominant formula (60:40 whey to casein ratio) — closer to human breast milk
- Long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA) including DHA and ARA — supports brain and eye development
- Prebiotics (GOS/FOS) — promotes healthy gut flora and immune function
- Nucleotides — supports immune system maturation
- Iron, calcium, and phosphorus — essential for bone development and growth
- Vitamins A, C, D, and E — supports immune health and antioxidant protection
- Taurine and L-carnitine — supports premature infant metabolism

Frequently Asked Questions
How long should my baby stay on Aptamil Preterm?
Aptamil Preterm is typically recommended until the baby reaches a corrected age of 6 months or achieves specific weight milestones. Always follow your pediatrician's guidance, as transition timing depends on individual growth patterns and medical history.
Can I mix Aptamil Preterm with breast milk?
Yes, many parents use combination feeding. Express breast milk can be offered alongside formula. Discuss feeding schedules and methods with your healthcare provider to ensure optimal nutrition and bonding.
What if my premature baby has difficulty digesting this formula?
Mild digestive adjustments are normal in the first 1–2 weeks. However, if your baby experiences persistent diarrhea, constipation, excessive gas, or allergic symptoms, contact your pediatrician immediately. They may recommend an alternative formula if needed.
Is Aptamil Preterm suitable for full-term babies?
Aptamil Preterm is specifically formulated for premature infants and is not recommended for full-term babies. Full-term infants have different nutritional requirements; use standard infant formula unless medically advised otherwise.
How do I know if the formula is working for my baby?
Signs of proper nutrition include steady weight gain, alertness, adequate wet diapers (6+ per day), and regular bowel movements. Regular pediatric check-ups track growth curves and developmental milestones.
Can I prepare Aptamil Preterm in advance?
It is not recommended to prepare formula in advance. Fresh formula reduces contamination risk and ensures optimal nutrient availability. Prepare only what your baby will consume immediately.
