The analysis of the influence of human rights on foreign policy must not be constrained by constructivist linkages between human rights and national identities. The recognition of human rights in foreign policy also derives from processes of domestic and international socialization and is sometimes the product of strategic realist decisions. This book presents a model of analysis for the assessment of the role of human rights in the definition of foreign policy in Europe. The model is applied to three case studies: Spain, the United Kingdom and the European Union.
