The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is India's largest Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) and the country's primary internal security force. Raised on July 27, 1939, as the Crown Representative's Police, it was renamed CRPF after Independence in 1949. With an authorised strength of over 3.2 lakh personnel and 246 battalions, CRPF has been deployed in virtually every major internal security operation — from counter-insurgency in Jammu & Kashmir and the Northeast to anti-Naxal operations in the Red Corridor.

What Each Rank Actually Does

Constable (GD) — Frontline Operations

CRPF Constables conduct area domination patrols in insurgency zones, man checkpoints, provide election security, and assist disaster relief. In anti-Naxal operations, they operate in dense forest terrain under extreme conditions.

Head Constable — Section Leader

Leads a small section of Constables, handles section-level administrative records, and acts as a bridge between enrolled personnel and the ASI/SI.

Sub-Inspector and ASI — Platoon Supervisors

Supervise a platoon, maintain discipline, prepare operational reports, and coordinate with local police during joint operations.

Assistant Commandant — Entry Gazetted Officer

Recruited via the UPSC CAPF (AC) exam. Commands a company of approximately 100 personnel. The first rank where strategic leadership and administration come into focus.

Commandant — Battalion Commander

Commands a CRPF Battalion of approximately 1,000–1,200 personnel. Fully responsible for the unit's operational and administrative functions — whether deployed in J&K, Chhattisgarh, or on election duty.

DIG — Sector Commander

Commands a Group Centre or operational sector of multiple battalions. Coordinates with state governments, intelligence agencies, and local police. In the Red Corridor, DIGs often lead joint anti-Naxal operations.

Inspector General — Zonal Command

Commands a Zone or Range overseeing multiple DIGs and their sectors. Interfaces with senior state government functionaries and MHA on strategic deployment.

Director General — The Apex

Heads the entire CRPF. Reports to the Ministry of Home Affairs and coordinates with the National Security Advisor and state DGPs during major operations.

CRPF's Specialist Units

  • CoBRA (Commando Battalion for Resolute Action): 10 elite battalions of jungle warfare specialists deployed against Left Wing Extremism. Raised in 2009. Same CRPF rank structure, advanced counter-insurgency training.
  • RAF (Rapid Action Force): 15 battalions specialising in riot control and communal violence response.
  • Mahila Battalions: All-women battalions for sensitive operations, crowd management, and frisking duties.
  • Signal and Engineering Battalions: Technical support units operating within the standard rank hierarchy.

As an Officer (Assistant Commandant)
