In recent years the concepts of sustainability and CSR have become very popular and are being actively discussed by professionals and academics. This tendency is being stimulated by climate change, pollution, human rights and other issues that are attracting attention of people worldwide. Automobive sector plays a very important role practically in any industrialized county and therefore has to adopt and follow the trends. The following study answers the questions “What sustainable development strategies do the companies in the automobive sector use and are they essential for them to remain competitive in the future?” by examining the largest automakers from three regions of the world: Europe, Japan and the United States. The study proves that the hypothesis that “Sustainability is an essential element of strategies of contemporary automobile manufacturers, which not only increases their value at the present moment, but also provides a competitive advantage for the future” is true and summarizes these sustainable development strategies in a comparison table, provided in the appendix for the paper.
