The strained relations between Taiwan and China have
always been strongly debated. However, most of the
authors discussing this issue tend to concentrate
only on the political and economic aspects while
neglecting the importance of the historical
background and the questions of culture and identity.
For this reason our main ambition is to study the
Taiwan-issue from as much viewpoints as possible. We
begin with the overview of the Taiwanese history. We
also deal with the issue of the Taiwanese economy,
concentrating on the unique economic miracle. What is
more, we scrutinise the Taiwanese identity which has
become an interesting issue in the past decades.
We would like to argue that Taiwan has the right to
be recognised as an independent, sovereign state and
to take its due place in the international
organisations. We believe that China should accept
the present developments and recognise Taiwan as an
