The research presented in this work investigates variations in Electronic Amiyya (colloquial Arabic) written in Latin script in seven countries in the Arab World—Israel/Palestine, Jordan, Egypt, Lebanon, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Morocco. The study constitutes a new type of research of the Arabic language in that it exploits the variationist sociolinguistic methodology developed by William Labov, but extends its application from spoken to written dialects.
